Helpful information for open houses
Here are some tips to get the most benefit from each open house we visit.
Let’s plan ahead by making a list of all the properties in the areas you like and schedule visits to work with your schedule. You don’t need to wait for an open house – we can provide access at a time that works best for you.
It may be helpful to know that a REALTOR® hosting an open house is accountable for the event and may convey any rules the home owner might have, such as removing shoes. Wear appropriate footwear and socks or slippers, if desired. Bare feet are not always the best choice due to safety and personal hygiene reasons.
The host REALTOR® may ask you to sign a guest registration book before allowing strangers into a client’s home. Your cooperation is appreciated!
Feature sheets with the property details are usually provided near the entrance. You may want to take one for notes and reference later. We will provide feature sheets with details and tax information for properties we visit together.
Please ask permission before taking photos and videos. It’s a private home and the owner may not want it photographed by the public.
Measuring rooms and looking inside closets is okay but please limit inspections to the home itself.
Reserve negative comments until later in case the homeowner is present.
Focus on the property when talking with the host REALTOR®. They are working for the seller and divulging information could cost you money in a negotiation.
Ask questions about schools, neighbours, assessments or other liabilities but keep in mind that sometimes the host isn’t the listing agent and may not have the answers you want.
